When I was a little girl, the library was one of my favorite places to go, as it allowed me to travel to new places, meet new people, and try new things – all from the comfort of the couch or my bed! Decades later, the library is still one of my favorite places for the same reasons, only now I get to share its magic with my precious grandkids!

While many things about the library are the same as they were when we were kids, there is even more to love about this public institution that you may not realize, as your library card affords you access to a plethora of different resources and activities, including:

Yes, this one is painfully obvious, but I am still willing to give it top billing, as a library card opens up a world of adventure and learning for your grandchild! By borrowing books, children can expand their vocabulary, stimulate their imagination, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Is there anything better?

A library card also grants access to an array of digital resources that can benefit a child’s education and entertainment. With e-books, audiobooks, and digital magazines, your grandchild can enjoy their favorite stories in different formats. Access to online databases and learning platforms can also support a child’s academic growth and curiosity.

When I was a girl, libraries didn’t even have storytimes (though I did attend many with my kids!), and now they offer several each day! Not only are there interactive read-alouds, but also a variety of workshops and events that can help children develop new skills, socialize with their peers, and foster a love for learning via craft workshops, STEM activities, and book clubs.

Did you know many libraries offer free passes to museums, zoos, aquariums, and other educational attractions? The next time you go, ask the librarian if this is an option for you! (If you visit the museum before you go to the library, you can also inquire about it, as some even offer free admission or deep discounts when you present your library card.)

In today’s digital age, it’s essential for children to develop computer and internet skills. By using a library card to access public computers and Wi-Fi, your grandchild(ren) can familiarize themselves with technology, complete homework assignments, or explore their interests online in a safe environment.

While I prefer to check out books with my grandkids, finding new movies to enjoy while we cuddle on the couch with popcorn can be nice! Many libraries also loan out audiobooks (via phone apps) and books on CDs that you and your grands can enjoy together.

2. Exploring the world of digital resources
